2013 KOTNYBB&W

Come meet the Greenville contingent of maggots at this year's Kick off the New Year BBQ & Wrenchfest, or the KOTNYBB&W for short.

Format will be typical wrenchfest fare. Bring 'em, work on 'em and get some help from people that have done it before (hopefully). A large, indoor, heated, well-lit, shop with good tunes (aka the Man-cave) will be provided. Stuff like work benches, Steeeeeeeve's 'spensive high-zoot NoMar tire changing machine and wheel balancer, motorcycle jacks, compressor, and assorted tools will be available. The days are short this time of year and we'll be drinking beer (except for Ryder if he shows, he's more of a tequila guy and KB leans towards soft drinks, but not as much as she used to), so bedrooms and plenty of floor space are also available, with the comfiest beds going to a complicated formula involving age, distance traveled, how much we like you and whether or not you piss off The Goddess, who will be in attendance this year.

Wrenching will start in earnest Saturday morning, but brew sampling, tire-sniffing, maggot greeting and some pre-wrenching can start Friday afternoon or early evening. We'll wrap up any loose ends and shoo everybody off Sunday morning.

What is it: KOTNYBB&W
Where is it: big red mo's in Greenville, SC
When is it: February 1-3, 2013

Interested? Contact me directly, Big Red Mo, with KOTNYBB&W in the subject line, for maps and directions.

SME 17.9 Spring Shakedown, Southern Style April 18-21, 2013

Come one, come all, and shake out the cobwebs of winter at a Spring Shakedown SME in Tellico Plains, TN, hosted by Jack & Lori Hunt. Visit the Tail of the Dragon, the Cherohala Skyway, and a host of local roads and let your tires revel in waking up for the first of many rides of the 2012 season.

Join us for a full country breakfast on Saturday morning, and a dinner of pulled pork with all the fixin's on Saturday night. You're one your own the rest of the time, and there is usually a semi-organized raid of a local restaurant for breakfast on Sunday morning for those inclined to do.

Host location:
    Hunt's Lodge Motorcycle Campground
    9555 Hwy 68
    Tellico Plains, TN 37385
    www.huntslodge.com
    423.253.2918

Lots of tent camping, limited cabin space. The cabins are styled after the KOA Kamping Kabins, which means that they have heat & a/c, but no private restrooms. There is a very nice showerhouse for all bathing needs.

Dates: Thursday, April ?? - Sunday, April ??, 2013

Why: Why not?

RSVP: Email Lori Mention if you have any dietary concerns for meal planning purposes.

May 17 to 19 at Gold Country Resort and Campgrounds. http://www. goldcountrycampground.com/index.html

Contact Lori for reservations and let her know you're with the SabMag group.

Here's what we have planned:

Friday May 17
- Arrivals, greeting, kicking tires, telling lies, and local riding for anyone with a mind to do that
- Pizza & beverages out in front of the motel rooms.

Saturday May 18
- The official 'Fling Ryde', with detailed route instructions and maps for each bike.
We will break up the ride into several groups, with a 'nuthammer' bunch out front, probably 3-4 mid-level groups, and a 'tourist' group taking up the rear. The ride will consist of four 'legs', with a stop in between to stretch, chat, etc. and lunch in the middle. After the post-lunch break what typically happens is some folks will take off on a longer ride (plenty of routes to choose from) while others (including me and the wife) head back to prepare for:
- The 'Fling Feast' with BBQ and trimmings for everyone, at the home base.

Sunday May 19
- Usually a group breakfast at one of the local eateries
- Departures

Thanks!

Ryde on!

SME 18.0 The Lafayette Hotel, Marietta, Ohio - June 6-9, 2013

Mark your calendars. The eighteenth annual SabMag East event, the old Burr Oak SME, will be taking place in June at the Lafayette Hotel in beautiful downtown Marietta, Ohio.

The Lafayette Hotel
101 Front Street
Marietta, OH 45750

There is a block of 24 rooms reserved for arrival on the evening of Thursday June 6 and departing on Sunday morning, June 9.

Room types and discounted group rates:
One double bed: $63
Two twin beds: $73
One queen bed: $83

Assorted fancier rooms for higher dollars. None have two beds but some have fold-out couches. There is a two-night minimum reservation.

The number to call to reserve is (740) 373-5522 or (800) 331-9336. Mention Sabmag to get into our room block and get the discount. If the room type you want isn't in the room block, but is available anyway, take it - the hotel is small and no room will be far away. If you reserve a room outside the room block, let me know, so I can get it added to our tally, and try to get you the group rates wherever you end up.

There are two restaurants on site. The Gun Room serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the lounge serves lunch, dinner and drinks. Sunday brunch buffet is $9.95 until 11am, $10.95 after 11am, or you can order off the menu for about what you'd pay for comparable stuff at Bob Evans. There are some brewpubs and restaurants within easy walking distance, but mostly they're upscale - more maggot-priced eateries are a short ride away.

The hotel website is at www.lafayettehotel.com. It's currently just a placeholder, but that's an improvement over the annoying music and broken flash links they had up there a month ago. Perhaps they are planning to make it useful soon.

Ron Erhardt opined, at the last Weaverville Ryde, that it was time for someone else to step up to the plate and organize an SME event, for the SoCal area. Well I volunteered and now have put plans into motion.

The venue is going to be Kernville, CA, which is at the Southern end of the Mighty Sierra Nevada Mountains. Also Kernville is smack dab in the middle of some fine roads, and also some excellent white water river rafting, with rapids of the bunny variety up to class 5. Also night life and eateries of all types, are there, plus they have there own microbrewery, which is but a few steps from the McCambridge Lodge. There are a few independent motorcycle shops in the area for the rear tyre challenged, but call ahead to see if they stock your size.

The Lodge has only 9 rooms, and if you miss out there, you can book at the Kern Lodge, 760-376-2223. www.kernlodge.com The Kern Lodge is but a few steps from the microbrewery also, but a bit more upscale. Make your reservations early for the best prices.

You can contact me via email, Harry Irvine, or at 661-972-6642, and also, via email, Dennis Grace or at 909-556-2235.

**CANCELED** Dave Andersen Memorial SME - July 19-21, 2013 - (near) Marion, VA

28 29 30 31

Mark your calendars:

The Dave Andersen Memorial SME, version 2, will be the third weekend of July, the 19th through 21st, near Marion, VA. This is the weekend before the Colorado Sabmag event. We'll be staying here: http//:www.cabinintheblueridge.com .

Location: N 36.95886 W 81.44671 / Haven Ridge Rd., Ceres, VA. This is 1/2 mile north of VA Route 42 and 4 miles east of Chatham Hill, VA, at the intersection of VA routes 16 and 42. Surrounding roads are easily the best in the east. All of the challenge and nice maintenance of your favorite TN and NC roads, without the traffic, and fantastic scenery. Technical twisty, relaxed scenic, and two-track dual sport routes will be provided, though the location was carefully selected for being in the exact center of the best twisty roads in this part of the country.

Directions: From the south via I-81, at Exit 45 get VA 16 though Hungry Mother State Park, about 15 miles but easily 1/2 hour or more. >From I-77, north or south, exit 52 at Bland, west 22 miles on VA 42. Please note that after dark, Route 16 can be very challenging and access via 42 is advised.

We are trying something different this year, a very private 4500 square foot log cabin lodge with lots of outdoor space, including a great campfire ring. There will be three levels of accomodations: a limited number of private bedrooms, a "bunkhouse" with five double beds, and plenty of flexible camping space with indoor showers. Like at Mo's, preference will be given to families and couples for the bedrooms and beds. Rooms will be $100 for the whole weekend; double beds in the bunkhouse, $68; camping, $22. First come, first served. Email me ASAP as I need a head count to make detailed arrangements with the owners. See you there!

For those not able to make it to the Kremmling Colorado run this July we are having an unofficial ride-in that corresponds to the Oregon Brewfest held in Portland Oregon July 24-28.

http://www.oregonbrewfest.com

I propose that we meet-up in Detroit Or. the 25th. I myself hit the brush for it is free camping along the Breitenbush River on FS road 46 with many nice, private places right off the road and just out of Detroit proper. Anybody who enjoys that is welcome to join me.

There is also pay camping and lodging in Detroit itself but reservations are needed to be made soon to assure you a place. This place is the most reasonable of the two Motels:

All Seasons Motel
130 Breitenbush Road
PO Box 565
Detroit, OR 97342
Phone: 503-854-3421

Here is the link to access the camping and other Motel:

http://www.detroitlakeoregon.org/

Detroit is 80 miles from Portland and 50 of those miles are some of the sweetest twisties, with fine sticky black pavement, to be found. There are also three accessible hot springs off of this road. Two cost, (Bagby and Brightenbush), and one right off the side of the road is free (Austen Hot Springs). If the sight of bare butts bothers you must stay away from the hot springs at all costs.

Any questions or suggestions please get a hold of me at 541-848-5910 or better e-mail me: geneb2kool

SMR 2013 - July 25-28, 2013 - Kremmling, CO.

28 29 30 31

Hi everyone who is attending SMR 2013 at Kremmling CO.

I just got off the phone this evening with Jeff, owner of the Muddy Creek Cabins and Red Mountain RV Park in Kremmling. There are ten fully furnished cabins with ceiling fans and additional portable fans if needed, no air conditioning in the cabins. Jeff said there are usually only three days a year that they wish they had air conditioning so hope this will be okay with most of our riders.

If someone has to bail to an air conditioned room there are two highly rated Inns in town, the Allington and the Cliffside.

Our group can pitch tents between the cabins but the only bathroom facilities are in the cabins which Jeff says may be shared with the cabin occupants if the occupants are okay with that. That might be a little awkward in the middle of the night but showers in the daytime might not be a problem. That all depends who is in the cabin and who is wanting in...

Alternatively, for the tent guys, Jeff also owns the Red Mountain RV Park which is a mile from the cabins and has bathroom and shower facilities for tenters. I’ll likely stay in the RV Park.

Both of these facilities are right in or on the edge of town so restaurants are nearby.

SabMag attendees will receive a 10% discount at either facility according to Jeff. Just let them know you are with the SabMag group when you make your reservations.

Jeff suggested making cabin reservations no later than the next 30 days if at all possible as the cabins are very popular during the tourist season. If tenting at the RV Park reservations should be made at least 30 days in advance of SMR 2013 dates 25. 26, 27 & 28 July

There are pavilions at either the Cabin site or the RV Park site where we can gather evenings if we like. The largest pavilion is at the Cabins site. Even though the tenters and cabineers will be separated by a mile one of the pavilions can be the central gathering place after rides to tell lies, etc. J

This worked okay at the last two SMRs where the groups were separated by tenting or motel lodging, Maggots will figure out how to gather up.

Bryan Williams of the Denver area has said there are many good loops from Kremmling.

Copied from one of his recent emails:

"If we're looking for some nice day loops then Kremmling would be the best starting point for central location ‘snip’ Loops from there that don't suck can run east and west through RMNP, up on 14 along the the Poudre river, Spring Creek pass, Rabbit ears and Muddy pass, and 134 heading west off of 40."

Don Goldston, also from the Denver area is well versed on rides in the area, we can call on these guys to describe the loops so each can ride his own ride.

Linda Lambert lives several hours north of Kremmling and says the roads up her way are great also.

I think we can have a mighty fine time. Following are links to all facilities mentioned above, let me know if you need more info:

http://www.muddycreekcabins.com/ Muddy Creek Cabins are the primary lodging, 10% discount if you mention SabMag group.

http://www.redmtnrvpark.com/ Red Mountain RV Park is the primary camping site, 10% discount if you mention SabMag grou.p

Inns below have air conditioning if anyone finds it necessary to bail for cool air

http://www.allingtoninn.com/kremmling/

http://www.cliffsideinnkremmling.net/

How about letting me know if you are coming so I can post a list of attendees now and then to let all know who we may expect. As usual if you're not there we'll sure talk about you evenings.....

Hope to see you there, L D

Back in the day, there was the SMW Fall Fling in Pine Grove, then it went away. Then the Spring Fling took a few years off and some maggots called a loosely-organized event held in the Trinity Alps town of Weaverville; but it only lasted a few years...

Now we're going to give it another shot in Weaverville, this time in the Fall. And we'll call it the SabMag West Fall Fling.

Typical Tellico SME events unfold - eat, ride, tell lies, that kind of thing. Okay, so the fall colors won't quite be at their peak, but there will be colors in the mountains, and do we really have to have an excuse to get together, eat, tell lies, and ride?.... I didn't think so, either...

We'll have a huge breakfast spread on Saturday and dinner on Saturday night. You're on your own for lunch because, quite frankly, most of you will be out riding anyway.

Free range style camping available, ping Lori if you'd like a bunk. If you don't want to chance having a bed upon which to lay your weary head, other places to stay can be found at http://www.huntslodge.com/other_accommodations_10.html.
