SME 18.9 Spring Shakedown, Southern Style - April 24-27, 2014
Come one, come all, and shake out the cobwebs of winter at a Spring Shakedown SME in Tellico Plains, TN, hosted by Jack & Lori Hunt. Visit the Tail of the Dragon, the Cherohala Skyway, and a host of local roads and let your tires revel in waking up for the first of many rides of the 2014 season. Join us for a full country breakfast on Saturday morning, and a dinner on Saturday night with a yet-to-be-determined menue. You're on your own the rest of the time, and there is usually a semi-organized raid of a local restaurant for breakfast on Sunday morning for those inclined to do. Here's what we have planned: Friday May 16 - Arrivals, greeting, kicking tires, telling lies, and local riding for anyone with a mind to do that - Pizza & beverages out in front of the motel rooms. Saturday May 17 - The official 'Fling Ryde', with detailed route instructions and maps for each bike. We will break up the ride into several groups, with a 'nuthammer' bunch out front, probably 3-4 mid-level groups, and a 'tourist' group taking up the rear. The ride will consist of four 'legs', with a stop in between to stretch, chat, etc. and lunch in the middle. After the post-lunch break what typically happens is some folks will take off on a longer ride (plenty of routes to choose from) while others (including me and the wife) head back to prepare for: - The 'Fling Feast' with BBQ and trimmings for everyone, at the home base. Mark your calendars. The nineteenth annual SabMag East event, the old Burr Oak SME, will be taking place in June at the Lafayette Hotel in beautiful downtown Marietta, Ohio.
The Lafayette Hotel 101 Front Street Marietta, OH 45750 There is a block of 24 rooms reserved for arrival on the evening of Thursday June 5 and departing on Sunday morning, June 8. Room types and discounted group rates: One double bed: $63 Two twin beds: $73 One queen bed: $83 Assorted fancier rooms for higher dollars. None have two beds but some have fold-out couches. There is a two-night minimum reservation. The number to call to reserve is (740) 373-5522 or (800) 331-9336. Mention Sabmag to get into our room block and get the discount. If the room type you want isn't in the room block, but is available anyway, take it - the hotel is small and no room will be far away. If you reserve a room outside the room block, let me know, so I can get it added to our tally, and try to get you the group rates wherever you end up. There are two restaurants on site. The Gun Room serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the lounge serves lunch, dinner and drinks. Sunday brunch buffet is $9.95 until 11am, $10.95 after 11am, or you can order off the menu for about what you'd pay for comparable stuff at Bob Evans. There are some brewpubs and restaurants within easy walking distance, but mostly they're upscale - more maggot-priced eateries are a short ride away. The hotel website is at www.lafayettehotel.com. It's currently just a placeholder, but that's an improvement over the annoying music and broken flash links they had up there a month ago. 2014’s SMR event will be July 17th - 20th at the Ponderosa campground in the heart of Cody, Wyoming.
Ponderosa Campground http://codyponderosa.com/ 1815 8th Street Cody, WY 82414 Phone: (307) 587-9203 While I would normally prefer a more secluded campground for such an event, I will be bringing my family who can easily go shopping while I’m off gallivanting around the area on a motorcycle. In addition, I’ve never been to this town. It’s one of the downsides of having a new site every year. However, Cody appears well situated, with Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, Beartooth Pass & Bighorn Scenic Byway loop within a one day round trip. Concerning the Ponderosa Campground, here are some of the issues: - Cash only - In the middle of the city (so one must ask for the more secluded campsites near the river) - Probably busy in July - They're closed for the season (Open April 15th - Oct 15th) - Hopefully they return phone calls Camping Rates: $24 / night $23 / night - AAA $22 / night - Good Sam Camping Cabins: $46 / night $43 / night - AAA $42 / night - Good Sam Teepees: $27 / night $26 / night - AAA $24 / night - Good Sam In addition, Cody has lots of hotels. Do you like fireworks? Then you've GOTTA see THESE! I don't even like fireworks, and *I'm* impressed by the demonstration this festival puts on. And best of all, it's FREE! Come down Friday night and hang out with maggots, spend the day Saturday riding around the best roads east of the Mississippi, then attend the fireworks Saturday night in downtown Marietta. Typically maggots stay at either the Aldeco or St. Mary's motels (New Matamoras, OH and St. Mary's, WV, respectively) or you el cheapos can grab grass for your tent at the Leith Run recreation area, about 10 miles south of the Aldeco, on SR 7 in Ohio. No matter how you play it, the game plan is always to meet up in downtown Marietta for dinner Saturday night, then head for the festival. Help us wind down our 8th season in style! Typical Tellico SME events unfold - eat, ride, tell lies, that kind of thing. Okay, so the fall colors won't quite be at their peak, but there will be colors in the mountains, and do we really have to have an excuse to get together, eat, tell lies, and ride?.... I didn't think so, either...
We'll have a huge breakfast spread on Saturday and dinner on Saturday night. You're on your own for lunch because, quite frankly, most of you will be out riding anyway.
